Impact of COVID Learning

The National Assessment of Education Progress, dubbed the nation’s “Report Card,” released academic progress of students in 2022.

The NAEP is a national exam that reports on 4th and 8th graders in their proficiency in 2 categories: Mathematics and Reading.

While these two metrics alone do not encapsulate a student’s overall abilities, it is a nationally recognized metric that reflects the academic progress of students in their most important stages of their education.

Researchers from Harvard and Stanford broke down these scores according to location, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status.

Across the board, every student has reported lower proficiency in math and reading compared to previous years; to levels that we have not seen since 20 years ago.

For students of color, their scores reported even lower in proficiency than their white counterparts. Furthermore, students of lower economic backgrounds scored the lowest of all categories.

“Among the nation’s 8th graders, about 1 in 4 were proficient in math [..] 1 in 3 were proficient in reading”

New York Times “The Daily”

This disparity has elicited the response of the federal government, who passed the CARES act that allocated more than $100 billion dollars in public school spending.

Educational researchers are saying this is not enough.

Studies from Harvard, Stanford, University of Chicago, and Brown, have found that the single most effective way to increase a student’s aptitude in academics was through individual afterschool tutoring.

“Tutor and then tutor again.”

Peggy Carr, Commissioner of the National Center for Education Statistics

This is where we come in.

We are a University of California student-run organization that has been providing free individual tutoring for K-12 students since 2020. With over 300 dedicated volunteer tutors and over 12,000 hours of service to support students, we are dedicated to combat this nation educational crisis.
